ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 Performance Review

For a gamer, streamer, content creator, or digital worker, a dual screen setup is a must. You see, with the presence of a second screen, the level of productivity will also increase.

If the case is on a PC, it's easy. Just buy an additional monitor, we will get a PC with dual monitors. So, what about laptops? It feels less comfortable if we have to carry a portable monitor everywhere.

However, ASUS has an interesting solution. Through the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551, they present a powerful laptop that uses two screens plus an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU combined with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU.

Elegant mixed with gaming

I will discuss it starting from the design. Overall, this laptop has a design that is not so different from its predecessor. The impression is simple and elegant, but still shouts "gaming" is still the design language of this laptop.

All parts of the laptop are wrapped in black color combined with a few chrome accents here and there, one of which is present as the ROG logo on the cover of the casing. In my opinion, this laptop is still worth carrying during an important meeting or meeting with an important client.

What surprised me was that even though it has a powerful CPU and GPU, the size of this laptop is still very compact. In fact, the thickness is impressive. So, this laptop is still comfortable to carry everywhere.

I / O ports on this laptop are also quite a lot, but separated in three zones. On the left, you will only get one SD Card reader, one charging port, and one 3.5mm headphone jack combo port.

While on the right there are two USB 3.2 Type-A. Not to forget, there is also a USB 3.2 Type-C that supports DisplayPort and also supports power delivery.

And on the back you will find 1 USB Type-A port, a Gigabit LAN port, and an HDMI.

The hot air dissipation section on this laptop is also quite a lot. There is a large heatsink on the left and right of the laptop, as well as on the back which is split into two different sectors.

Meanwhile, for fresh air, this laptop takes it from the bottom and from the place where the screens of both laptops are raised. We'll also see a large speaker in a nearby location.

Uncompromising display and speakers

On the screen, you will get a 15.6-inch IPS panel for the main screen. While the second screen uses the same panel, it comes with a 14.1-inch touchscreen feature that ASUS calls the ROG ScreenPad Plus.

For the main screen, you will get a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). You will get a screen with 100% sRGB color accuracy and has a Pantone Validated certification, making it suitable for digital designers or content creators.

Meanwhile, for gamers, ASUS offers a screen with a screen refresh rate of up to 300 Hz with a response time of up to 3ms. The screen is coated with an anti-glare coating and has a brightness level of up to 340 nits.

You will also be presented with thin bezels on all three sides of this laptop screen, which means there is no camera for you. However, ASUS bundled a separate webcam, the ROG EYE GC21, which also has a microphone in it.

As for the second screen, aka ROG ScreenPad Plus, the screen has a resolution of 1920×550 pixels with an aspect ratio of 32:9. This screen has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, 100% sRGB color coverage and a brightness level of 400 nits, and also has an anti-glare surface.

There are a few notes when using this laptop when both screens are used together. For some reason, when I use both screens, the main screen of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 can't run more than 60Hz.

Meanwhile, when turning off the second screen of this laptop completely, I can run the main monitor at 300Hz. So, if you want to play while streaming , get ready your main screen is locked at 60Hz. But, hopefully this problem can be resolved soon through a software update.

Turning to audio, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 has a four-speaker audio system, with support for Stereo Audio by Dolby Atmos. At the bottom right and left of the laptop, there are 2 4W speakers with Smart Amp Technology. Then under the second screen there are 2 W speakers as much as 2 pieces that function as Tweeters.

My experience using this laptop was very interesting, because I had to adjust the configuration of the two screens on the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551. While watching movies, I am spoiled with stunning visuals.

Likewise when I use this laptop to edit photos or videos, where the color reproduction is very good. And when playing games, the screen is very responsive and has a high refresh rate .

And for the sound, the sound is loud, and doesn't get loud when I use the maximum volume. So, you can consume any content very comfortably on this laptop.

Soft keyboard, touchpad in odd position
One thing that has to be sacrificed by ASUS to provide a second screen in a strange and magical keyboard layout. The touchpad is tiny and positioned to the right of the keyboard.

The experience of using the touchpad is very uncomfortable. Well, even when I switch to numpad (yes, you have to use the mouse and make the touchpad a numpad), the function is very large.

Switching to the keyboard, to be honest the user experience is very comfortable. The keys are soft, responsive, and the keycaps are quite wide and far apart from each other. The keyboard also supports per-key RGB, but I'm more comfortable with making it a single color, like static red or blue.

Make sure you use the palm rest in the sales package if you plan to use the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 for a long time. Really, you will feel sore and sore wrists if you don't use it.

And because the exhaust duct of this laptop is on the side, when doing long gaming sessions, the thumb of our right hand is uncomfortable because of the air exhaust when using the mouse. So, you need to pay attention to that too!

Powerful performance, a mix of AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

In addition to the keyboard and screen, the main concern of this laptop is the specifications that ASUS uses. They use an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU in this ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551.

The processor has a total of 8 cores and 16 threads , which is one of the best gaming laptop CPUs on the market. Users will also get a speed boost of up to 4.4GHz.

While the RTX 3060 on this laptop has a total of 3840 Cuda Cores with 6GB DDR6 VRAM which is quite relieved. These specifications can be matched with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU for desktops.

Not to forget, ASUS also offers 16GB RAM DDR4 3200MHz dual channel and 1TB SSD M.2 NVMe inside, at least this is the unit I reviewed. You will also be able to choose several other configurations on this laptop.

Unfortunately, this laptop has one 8 GB RAM embedded in the motherboard . So, you can only replace one RAM chip. Meanwhile, for storage, you will have one empty M.2 NVMe SSD slot to upgrade.

And here are the benchmark results that I have done:

For synthetic benchmark test results, we see that this AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU has very high performance. So, you don't have to worry about using applications that require high core count and high speed.

And for games, you no longer need to doubt the performance of this laptop. Various AAA games can be devoured well at high graphics settings. What's more, you can play eSport games with a frame rate of more than 230 fps.

As for battery usage, when testing, when using both screens, this laptop can only last for 3 hours in the PCMark 10 test. And when the screen is turned off, this laptop can last for approximately 6 hours 50 minutes.

For charging, this laptop can charge very quickly. To reach 50%, we only need about 30 minutes. And to fully charge, we only need about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Advantages and Disadvantages of ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15

The following is a review of the advantages and disadvantages of ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15:

Conclusion: one screen is not enough, two is the answer

To meet the needs of this modern era, a laptop with two screens does have a very big advantage. What's more for gamers, streamers, content creators, and digital workers who really need a second screen to increase their productivity.

Good CPU performance combined with a fast GPU is a bonus. A good cooling system as well as a capable screen and audio make this laptop perfect.

One thing that bothers me is the very premium price. You have to spend around $2,199.99 for the model we are currently reviewing. You also have to pay $2,899.99 for the Ryzen 9-5900HX variant and the RTX 3070 GPU.

As for the Ryzen 9-5900HX CPU variant and the RTX 3080 GPU with a 4K screen, it will be start priced at $2,199.99 - $2,899.99.
