ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Review - A Perfection Rarely Found

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Specification Review

ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II has a robust range of I/O for a 14-inch notebook. This laptop has two standard USB ports, two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI 2.0 output, and a headphone jack. However, you need to give the G14 a 'B' in I/O, due to the lack of an Ethernet port.

Our ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II comes with a 14-inch WQHD (1440p) panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. One of the biggest limitations of the G14 is the panel's inability to match performance. Asus also offers notebooks in Full HD (1080p) screens with a refresh rate of 120Hz.

The WQHD panel is designed for professional gamers by day and gamers by night. The display delivers a 100-percent RGB color gamut and an above-average brightness of 330 nits. This lightness puts it on par with some premium laptops like the Dell XPS and MSI Prestige. In terms of color reproduction, the G14's WQHD panel is spot on.

ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II is powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 4600HS paired with an Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics card. This notebook is also equipped with 8GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM and 1TB M.2 SSD. For a 14-inch notebook, the G14 has enough power with a 7-core CPU and RTX GPU.

When used to play E-sports, ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II performs very well. When playing Overwatch, you can get a little over 110 fps on average at high settings.

Along with the reliable performance of the ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II that stands out, the battery life of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is also a highlight. If this laptop is only used for browsing via Wi-Fi with a brightness of 150 nits, the battery can last up to 11 hours and 32 minutes.

The battery life on the ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401II makes it the most durable gaming laptop you can buy today. Unfortunately, if you use it to play games, this laptop can only last 1 to 2 hours.

ASUS has officially brought the ROG Zephyrus G14 by bringing a myriad of innovations that might change the landscape of gaming laptops.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Performance Review

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 itself was first introduced at CES 2020 where it immediately became the talk of the visitors who attended. How not, the latest laptop from the ROG Zephyrus line looks very stunning while carrying specifications that cannot be underestimated.

The main thing that will immediately attract attention when you first see the ROG Zephyrus G14 is of course thanks to its unique and luxurious design, especially on the cover with ErgoLift equipped with AniMe Matrix.

  • Screen - 10/10
  • Performance - 10/10
  • Battery - 9/10
  • Features and Connectivity - 10/10
  • Design - 10/10

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 can be said to be an almost perfect gaming laptop for those who want a balance between high performance, style, and portability.

  • Powerful performance for heavy gaming
  • Satisfying charming screen
  • Unique and second to none design
  • The battery is quite durable for a gaming laptop
  • Full of innovative features
  • Light and slim body

  • No webcam at all
  • The side of the body is relatively hot
The latest feature that cannot be found on other laptops is a collection of 1,251 mini LEDs that can display various types of animation, text, and effects on the cover of the ROG Zephyrus G14.

If previously the ROG line of laptops was identical with the red eye logo that really accentuated the gamer's accent, AniMe Matrix is   relatively calmer but looks more 'high-tech' which is guaranteed to make people around curious to take a closer look.

There are 256 brightness levels owned by each mini LED so that each animation will be clearly visible even though the environmental conditions are many light sources.

ASUS also provides several presets or templates that can be used instantly. Interestingly, this AniMe Matrix has an equalizer mode that will move along with the chanting of songs or other audio sources.

Of course, users can also customize what they want to display in AniMe Matrix, whether it's in the form of images, text, or others. Users can combine various effects at once or make it more informative by displaying the clock and notifications, all of which can be adjusted according to taste.

Turning to the overall design, the ROG Zephyrus G14 that I tested comes in Moonlight White color (there is another variant in Eclipse Gray) which makes it look very subdued like a snow white from the future under the moonlight.

The minimalist design makes ROG Zephyrus G14 suitable for use by all circles and still has a gaming characteristic for those who want to show it off. One of them is the Republic of Gamers plaque which is affixed to the bottom left corner of the cover.

That way it won't be a problem if you want to bring this one laptop to a formal meeting or the like because it will match whatever style you use. Meanwhile, if you want a gaming party, you can immediately turn on the AniMe Matrix to show your identity as a gamer.

In addition to the soft white color, ROG Zephyrus G14 also has gray accents for the half body which gives the impression that this laptop is sturdy and made of quality materials which is certainly true when you hold it and feel it directly.

Just like other brothers in the Zephyrus family, this laptop has a fairly small body for the size of a gaming laptop. It weighs only 1.6 kg with a thickness of 1.79 cm which makes it very competitive with ultrathin laptops. As a result, ROG Zephyrus G14 is very easy to put in a bag to take anywhere.

Despite having a slim body, ASUS apparently managed to provide a fairly complete port, starting from two USB Type-C, two USB Type-A, HDMI 2.0b, audio combo jack, and Kensington lock. That way this laptop supports a variety of today's devices, including connecting two monitors at once thanks to the HDMI and USB Type-C ports.

Interestingly, the USB Type-C on the left apparently supports the Power Delivery feature so that the laptop can be recharged using a charger up to 65W if desired. But of course to be able to deliver maximum performance from the ROG Zephyrus G14 requires a 180W default charger provided in the sales package.

Moving on to the main part, ROG Zephyrus G14 will immediately present a 14-inch screen that looks charming with thin bezels. The screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with support for a refresh rate of up to 120Hz to bring the best experience to its users.

Having a high refresh rate is certainly very important for gamers when playing action games that require fast reactions because the animation movement is displayed much smoother and input is more responsive than screens with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Not only that, the screen from ROG Zephyrus G14 also has a PANTONE Validated Display certificate because it has been calibrated directly to provide accurate colors. Therefore, this laptop can also be used by content creators thanks to its superior screen.

To support the screen with a high refresh rate, ASUS has embedded an AMD Ryzen 7-4800HS processor with Zen 2 architecture which has 8 Cores and 16 Threads and is manufactured on 7nm FinFET fabrication. The use of the AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile Series is also one of the reasons why ROG Zephyrus G14 can have a slim body.

Along with that there is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card with 4GB VRAM for graphics processing needs as well as 8GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD storage on the ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401I variant that the team tested.

For those of you who need even higher performance, ASUS also has another variant of the ROG Zephyrus G14 where the highest one offers a Ryzen 9 4900HS processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD.

The combination of specifications allows ROG Zephyrus G14 to provide the best optimal performance for various users. Its powerful performance is also reflected in the benchmark results obtained.

In the 3DMark application, ROG Zephyrus G14 got a score of 9,432 points for the Fire Strike test with an average of 48FPS and 27,800 points on Night Raid with an average of 170 FPS. As for the ability of the processor itself, it gets 3,781 points on Cinebench R20.

As a laptop that carries the name Rebublic of Gamers, of course ROG Zephyrus G14 must be tested for real abilities when running heavy games. One of them is Shadow of Tomb Raider made by Crystal Dynamics.

Given the relatively slim body, this laptop is able to provide extraordinary performance. This laptop can provide an average of 55FPS in the High preset and 49FPS in the Highest preset at the native resolution when tested using the benchmark features provided.

When played live, the game runs very smoothly without any lags or crashes. In addition, there are no pop up problems, both objects and textures that interfere with its fast performance.

The loading process is also very short, so you don't have to wait too long every time you have to reload when you make an error that causes the character to die or continue to the next place.

The next test ran the Control game, which was just released in 2019. This game from Remedy Entertainment is praised for its stunning visuals and physics effects that will test the limits of both CPU and GPU capabilities.

Using the highest graphics settings, ROG Zephyrus G14 is able to run this one game at a range of 40-50 FPS in various segments without any problems, including even when there are many particle effects.

In some cutscenes, this game even runs more than 100FPS so that the capabilities of the screen owned by ROG Zephyrus G14 can be felt to the fullest. There is no image that looks like it is splitting due to the GPU generated image and what is displayed on the monitor is out of sync which is common when the FPS is running too high.

Judging from these abilities, ROG Zephyrus G14 is guaranteed to be able to crush all the games that exist today with ease. Its high performance is certain to be able to take advantage of its 120Hz screen in lighter games such as eSports.

This performance also provides a pleasant experience when using ROG Zephyrus G14 for daily work and other activities. Every application can be opened quickly and the system feels very responsive which will definitely help users to be more productive.

Plus, the backlit keyboard provided this time is very comfortable to use for typing for a long time. Although it feels a little soft, it still has a good travel distance and each key is stable and doesn't wobble so that it helps to be able to type more accurately.

It's just that, the laptop will feel quite hot when running heavy load applications or have been used for a long time due to the material of the body itself. Moreover, there are two vents located on the left and right where the surface feels the hottest.

Even so, the cooling solution that ASUS presents in the ROG Zephyrus G14 is quite successful in keeping the system temperature and components stable in order to provide optimal performance. Users can also adjust how the fan works, whether it's Silent, Performance, Turbo, to Manual which will provide different fan performance and noise levels.

Just as usual, the Armory Crate is the center of the problem for ROG laptops where there are settings and features that can be used. Apart from of course setting the AniMe Matrix display, you can activate the Aura Sync feature to create a separate profile for each need.

After seeing how the performance provided by ROG Zephyrus G14, battery life is a concern, considering that this segment has often been the scourge of a gaming laptop so far.

However, it seems that this is slowly changing because recently gaming laptops have started to appear that have quite capable battery life and ROG Zephyrus G14 is included in the list. Thanks to the use of the AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile Series processor, this laptop is quite efficient in consuming power.

When tested using PCMark 8 in Home mode with AniMe Matrix and the backlit keyboard off, ROG Zephyrus G14 managed to get a score of 4 hours 22 minutes for tests that simulate the burden of everyday user performance in general.

Meanwhile, when all the AniMe Matrix features are on and the backlit keyboard is turned on, the score is 3 hours 48 minutes. This figure is in line with what was reported by ASUS where AniMe Matrix can drain about 25% of the battery when active, so users should set their use in Armory Crate as optimally as possible.

Even so, this number is above the average for mainstream gaming laptops, which are usually less than 2 hours. That way, ROG Zephyrus G14 still goes through a learning session or meeting without having to always be connected to an electrical outlet.

This laptop is also equipped with a 160W adapter for charging so that users only need to wait about 1 hour 25 minutes for the battery to be fully charged again from the 19% remaining.

Overall, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 can be said to be an almost perfect gaming laptop for those who want a balance between high performance, style, and portability. Users who like to express themselves will be satisfied with the latest features of AniMe Matrix which can be customized as desired.

Of course, this laptop can accompany all your digital affairs easily at any time. This time, ASUS succeeded in presenting a device that can be used by all groups without forgetting one segment because the ROG Zephyrus G14 looks tempting from any angle you look at it.
